250 Years Strong: Celebrating the Industry That Helped Build America
This Independence Day is unlike any other.
As we celebrate 250 years of the United States of America, we honor not only the courage of those who declared our independence, but also the manufacturers whose work helped transform a bold idea into the strongest industrial nation the world has ever known.
For those of us in the foundry industry, this anniversary is especially meaningful.
Long before the United States became a manufacturing powerhouse, foundries were producing the components that made a growing nation possible. They supplied everything from tools and hardware to military equipment, transportation systems, infrastructure, machinery, and countless products that allowed America to grow, innovate, and defend itself.
In fact, manufacturing was woven into our nation's founding.
Among the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence were seven leaders with direct ties to foundries and metal manufacturing: Charles Carroll, Stephen Hopkins, Philip Livingston, George Ross, James Smith, George Taylor, and James Wilson. These men understood that political independence and industrial capability go hand in hand. A nation that can build for itself is a nation that can stand on its own.
That truth is just as important today as it was in 1776.
Every day, America's foundries produce the cast components that keep our country moving. Our industry supplies critical parts for aerospace, defense, energy, transportation, infrastructure, medical technology, and manufacturing. From the aircraft that protect our skies to the naval vessels that defend our shores, from the electrical grid that powers our communities to the equipment that keeps our factories running, foundries remain an essential part of America's strength.
Our members don't simply manufacture castings.
They strengthen America's supply chain.
They create skilled manufacturing careers.
They drive innovation.
They support our national security.
They help ensure that America can continue making the products our economy and our military depend on right here at home.
At the Non-Ferrous Founders' Society (NFFS), we are proud to represent an industry that has quietly powered America's success for generations. While technologies have evolved over the past 250 years, one thing has remained constant: when America needs to build something that lasts, it turns to its foundries.
As we celebrate this historic milestone, we also celebrate the thousands of men and women who continue that tradition every day. Their craftsmanship, ingenuity, and commitment ensure that America's next 250 years will be just as strong as its first.
This Fourth of July, we proudly celebrate our nation's past, our industry's enduring contributions, and the manufacturers who continue to build a stronger, safer, and more resilient America.
From all of us at the Non-Ferrous Founders' Society, Happy Independence Day and here's to the next 250 years of American manufacturing!
