About Craftsman with Character®

Craftsman with Character is a proven workforce development program that equips high school students with the skills, mindset, and character needed to succeed in the skilled trades — and in life.

Founded by Dave Hataj, president of Edgerton Gear and a second-generation gear manufacturer, the program was born out of a desire to rebuild the dignity of work and invest in the next generation of tradespeople. Craftsman with Character brings together educators, local employers, and community leaders to create real-world opportunities for students — while teaching timeless values like integrity, purpose, and responsibility.

What Makes It Different?

Unlike traditional workforce programs, Craftsman with Character focuses on the whole person. It’s more than job training — it’s character-building.

Through a semester-long, high school-based course, students are immersed in:

  • Hands-on learning in manufacturing and trades

  • Job shadowing with local businesses

  • Mentorship from industry professionals

  • Values-based curriculum that develops purpose, discipline, and personal responsibility

The Results Speak for Themselves

  • Increased student engagement and confidence

  • Stronger connections between schools and local industry

  • Businesses gaining access to motivated, entry-level talent

  • Young people discovering meaning and direction in their work

A Win-Win for Industry and Education

Craftsman with Character bridges the gap between the classroom and the shop floor — offering students a vision for the future and giving companies a way to invest in a stronger, more prepared workforce.

Whether you're a business leader, educator, or workforce development professional, this program offers a tangible, scalable way to make a long-term impact.
