NFFS Announces New Technical Program Addressing Nickel Aluminum Bronze

The Non-Ferrous Founders’ Society is launching a new technical program to help strengthen quality, reliability, and competitiveness across the U.S. non-ferrous foundry industry.

The Reject Rate Reduction Program, also known as R3, will begin with a focused effort on Nickel Aluminum Bronze and Copper-Nickel alloy castings. These materials are critical to naval, marine, defense, industrial, and infrastructure applications, and they represent an important opportunity for the domestic non-ferrous casting supply base.

The purpose of R3 is to work directly with industry to identify recurring quality and production challenges, better understand their root causes, and develop practical guidance that helps foundries reduce defects, improve delivery performance, and increase customer confidence in U.S.-made non-ferrous castings.

This is not an audit, inspection, or fault-finding effort. R3 is intended to be a collaborative technical resource for foundries and suppliers. Many companies already know the frustration of recurring quality issues, unclear reject causes, and misdirected production problems. NFFS intends for this program to help bring better technical support, better communication, and more useful problem-solving resources to the industry.

Through the program, NFFS will work with foundries, suppliers, customers, technical experts, and other stakeholders to identify common challenges and develop practical recommendations that can support improved casting performance. The long-term goal is to help raise industry quality, reduce avoidable rejects, strengthen domestic supply chains, and support additional business opportunities for U.S. non-ferrous foundries.

Call for R3 Steering Committee Volunteers

Industry participation is essential to the success of this program.

NFFS is forming an R3 Steering Committee to help guide the effort and ensure that the work is shaped by the people who understand Nickel Aluminum Bronze, Copper-Nickel, and related production challenges firsthand. The committee will help frame the technical problem set, identify priority issues, review proposed approaches, and guide the development of practical industry recommendations.

NFFS is seeking volunteers from the Nickel Aluminum Bronze and Copper-Nickel casting community, particularly foundry managers, operators, metallurgists, engineers, quality personnel, technical leaders, and others with direct experience in these alloy systems.

This is an opportunity for the non-ferrous foundry industry to help define its own technical needs, strengthen its connection with government and customer stakeholders, and shape a stronger future for domestic casting production.

Companies and individuals interested in participating in the R3 Steering Committee are encouraged to contact Ian Wiese, NFFS Director of Technical Services, at ian@nffs.org.
