The Reject Rate Reduction (R3) program reached an important milestone on July 15, when the Non-Ferrous Founders’ Society convened the first meeting of the R3 Technical Committee.
The meeting brought together representatives from NFFS, Federal Metal Company, H. Kramer, MetalTek International, Milwaukee Valve, BDJ Metal Products, and other parts of the naval non-ferrous casting supply chain. More than a routine project update, the meeting established the industry group that will help shape how R3 gathers information, identifies recurring problems, and develops practical assistance for suppliers.
R3 was created around a straightforward but ambitious objective: reduce rejects, rework, and avoidable delivery delays affecting high-priority naval components. The program is initially focused on Nickel Aluminum Bronze and Copper-Nickel castings, where technical challenges can move through an entire supply chain.
A problem may begin with material condition, chemistry, tooling, gating, solidification, or process control, but it may not be discovered until machining, nondestructive testing, final inspection, or assembly. By that point, the result is not only a rejected casting. It may also be a missed delivery, an emergency repair, a qualification concern, or a loss of confidence between customer and supplier.
That is why industry participation is central to R3. NFFS cannot build a useful program from a distance, and no single organization sees every part of the problem.
Foundries understand where defects appear in production. Ingot makers and material suppliers see chemistry, melt practice, and input-material issues across multiple customers. OEMs, shipyards, and other customers understand the consequences of defects and delays in the larger manufacturing and sustainment system. Inspectors, engineers, quality personnel, and technical specialists often see patterns that do not appear in a simple reject-rate number.
R3 needs those perspectives together.
The committee’s first meeting focused on defining that shared view. NFFS presented an initial inventory of the data categories the program might eventually collect, including the type of issue, where it was discovered, where it was located in the casting, the stage of production involved, whether the issue was internal or external, and what effect it had on rework, delivery, or customer acceptance.
The inventory also included information about components, alloys, suppliers, inspection methods, qualification, and recurring process conditions. The purpose was not to impose a finished questionnaire. It was to give the committee something concrete to examine and improve.
That distinction matters. R3 will only be useful if the information requested is both technically meaningful and realistic for companies to provide. The committee is being asked to help determine which fields are essential, which are optional, what can be reported without exposing proprietary or customer-sensitive information, and how the resulting data can lead to action.
A technically elegant data system that nobody has time or confidence to use will not reduce a single reject. The committee’s role is to keep the program connected to the realities of production, inspection, scheduling, and customer communication.
R3 is not an audit.
It is not intended to rank companies, create a public scorecard, assign blame, or turn individual production problems into compliance findings. It is an industry-led effort to understand where recurring problems originate and to help participating organizations address them.
Companies will be able to contribute in ways that fit their circumstances, beginning with a conversation or a non-sensitive example. In many cases, the most valuable contribution may be an explanation of how a problem was discovered, what questions were asked, and what ultimately corrected it. Those lessons can help the broader industry without identifying a specific company or customer.
The first meeting also made clear that the committee must continue to grow. The initial group provided a strong foundation, but R3 needs a broader cross-section of the supply chain if its conclusions are going to be credible and useful.
We need additional participation from foundries producing Nickel Aluminum Bronze and Copper-Nickel castings, ingot makers, naval component suppliers, OEMs, shipyards, inspection organizations, engineering groups, and quality professionals. We also need companies that have experienced recurring problems and companies that have found effective ways to prevent or resolve them.
Both perspectives matter.
The next R3 Technical Committee follow-up call will take place on Wednesday, July 29, at noon Central time. The discussion will build on the first meeting and the feedback received on the initial data-field inventory.
Expected topics include refining the proposed intake approach, identifying the most important information gaps, organizing future industry conversations, and determining how the committee can support the next stages of R3.
If your organization did not attend the first meeting, you are still encouraged to participate. The program needs more voices, more experiences, and more technical perspectives than any single meeting can provide.
Participation does not require a formal presentation or a complete data set. It can begin with a brief discussion about the problems your organization sees, the information that would help explain them, and the kinds of assistance that would make a real difference. We are especially interested in hearing from people who work close to the process and can distinguish between what looks good on paper and what is practical on the shop floor.
R3 is being built to serve the industry, but it can only do that if the industry helps build it. The more representative the Technical Committee becomes, the better NFFS can identify meaningful patterns, focus assistance where it is most needed, and translate the results into guidance that companies can actually use.
