NY Foundries: Cut Energy Costs with NYSERDA’s On-Site Energy Manager Program

Posted By: Jerrod Weaver News, Industry, NFFS,

New York’s On-Site Energy Manager (OsEM) program can help industrial facilities—including nonferrous foundries—cut energy use, comply with state requirements, and lower operating costs by co-funding a dedicated part-time or full-time energy manager. NYSERDA’s OsEM program provides a cost-share (typically up to 75% for industrial sites) with caps that vary by annual energy spend (up to $200,000 for sites with >$1M annual energy spend; up to $100,000 otherwise). Certain sectors (e.g., affordable multifamily) may qualify for higher cost-share levels. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through December 31, 2025, or until funds are fully committed.

What the OsEM can do for your plant: identify and execute operations & maintenance improvements, energy-efficiency upgrades, and water-saving measures; build a data-driven energy plan; and coordinate cross-functional teams to deliver savings and productivity gains. NYSERDA notes that the energy manager can be a new hire or a contracted provider.

Eligibility snapshot (industrial sites):
• Located in New York State and contributing to the electric System Benefits Charge (SBC)
• No existing dedicated full-time on-site energy manager
• Willingness to continue the role beyond the initial engagement and share results with NYSERDA

Application window & term details: Initial engagements are typically at least 12 months, with potential continuation and small bonus incentives for sustained progress. Submit proposals via the NYSERDA portal; funding is limited.

Trusted help for NFFS members: NFFS Associate Member Environ (a NYSERDA partner) can act as your part-time or full-time OsEM and will:
• Identify and prioritize improvements
• Prepare and submit the funding application
• Lead strategic planning, feasibility, communications, data collection, and reporting
• Drive managerial/behavioral change and work with senior leadership and cross-functional teams
• Establish a durable approach to energy efficiency and productivity improvements
