The results of a Section 232 investigation into U.S. aluminum imports were delivered to President Donald Trump by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross yesterday, January 21, 2018. The president has ninety days to decide whether to impose tariffs or quotas on aluminum imports, actions which could benefit U.S. producers. The president also recently received results of a Section 232 investigation into steel imports, and has yet to make a determination on this trade case. Any tariffs issued in response to the Aluminum 232 report would most certainly impact non-ferrous foundries with higher market prices for primary aluminum and secondary aluminum alloys. NFFS has previously called for any tariffs or quotas to be focused on where the market distortion is occurring, namely China, and to exclude Canadian Aluminum Manufacturers and Exporters.
