For NFFS, 2018 was a year of “firsts”! Milestones were reached, momentum was built, and records were set. Before we launch into 2019, let’s take a look back and reflect on the successes of the past year.

75th Anniversary
What a milestone! In 2018, NFFS celebrated 75 years of service to the non-ferrous metalcasting industry. NFFS has been incredibly forunate over the decades to have a long history of support from industry leaders, member foundries and individuals. No association can achieve such an important milestone without the dedication and supports of a committed group of volunteers, members and staff. As we close out this memorable year, we look forward to another 75 years of service!

Membership Growth
At the end of the NFFS fiscal year in June, our membership was up 6.8% from the prior year! Twenty-four new foundries joined the Society, and we had an overall retention rate of 85%. As of December 31st, NFFS now represents a total of 153 foundry facilities, the largest membership in over a decade! This success is partly due to the leadership of our expanded membership committee, under the leadership of Committee Chair Jay Armstrong of Trialco. The committee focuses its efforts on developing programs and services that meet the unique needs and challenges of the small- and medium-sized non-ferrous foundries who make up the bulk of our membership.

Silica Compliance Resources
The new respirable silica rule hit the industry with full effect in 2018, and NFFS was there to help its members with compliance. NFFS developed comprehensive educational materials and compliance documents on the topic, written specifically for non-ferrous foundries. In addition to the six webinars covering everything from the basics of silica hazards to how to conduct air sampling, multiple articles covering the new rule and how to comply, and two educational programs on how to develop an engineering feasibility study, NFFS developed ten engineering feasibility documents covering the most common sources of silica exposure in non-ferrous foundries. These documents have the potential to save foundries thousands of man hours, and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Industry Executive Conference
In October 2018, over one hundred foundry owners, executives, suppliers and guests from across North America met in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, for the annual NFFS Industry Executive Conference at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Resort and Spa. Attendees included nine past presidents and sixteen first-time attendees. This represented a 10% increase in attendance over the prior year, and the first time that the Society visited this memorable, unique location.

Financial Performance

Revenues for FY18 were up across the board in every category. The largest increase was due to a new contract for the ICON program, causing grant income to increase 151%. Membership dues revenue continues to slowly grow as membership numbers increase. The Industry Executive Conference posted a 24% gain in revenue, contributing significantly to the surplus for the reporting period. As of the end of the fiscal year, retained earnings for the Society were at the highest point in NFFS history! NFFS thanks the members of its Finance Committee for the time and effort that they contributed over the past year, and congratulates them this notable achievement.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year and a successful 2019!
