First created in 2012, Manufacturing Day began with the ambitious goal of affecting the public’s perception of manufacturing and inspiring more people to pursue manufacturing careers. Its creators wanted to correct the idea that manufacturing involves repetitive, unskilled tasks in dark, dirty factories, and to show people what manufacturing really looks like. The fact is, today’s manufacturing jobs are highly skilled. Not only that, but they take place in some of the most exciting, innovative work environments anywhere.

Manufacturing Day has enjoyed support from many organizations aligned with its mission, including the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute (MI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). Manufacturing Day is now produced annually by the NAM.

Manufacturing Day is designed to amplify the voice of individual manufacturers and coordinate a collective chorus of manufacturers with common concerns and challenges. It empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive. By working together, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of their public image, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry.
