OSHA Written Programs:
Most non-ferrous foundry owners and managers clearly try to comply with all of the various safety, health and environmental regulatory requirements being imposed on their businesses, but many often lack both the time and expertise to fully comprehend what is required, let alone how to comply.
For this reason, NFFS has taken on the role of crafting fill-in-the-blanks compliance programs for smaller foundries that do not have dedicated environmental or human resource professionals on staff to do the job for them.
Some examples of the types of generic compliance assistance programs available from the Society are: Storm Water Pollution Prevention Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) - a generic fill-in-the-blanks format designed to give foundries general framework to follow in implementing this requirement of state and federal storm water permits.
Under federal law, most industrial facilities are required to have a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan in place by September, 1996. Pollution Prevention Training - EPA Storm Water Permits require that employers annually train their employees in Storm Water Pollution Prevention. NFFS offers a complete training package that includes a 22 minute generic (not foundry-specific) pollution prevention videotape, workbook and a test to be administered to employees following the training program.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that companies maintain comprehensive written programs detailing their compliance efforts with regard to various safety and health standards like those listed above. Often, these programs must which be periodically updated and available to all employees. Some require that monitoring & testing results, as well as documentation of required training and/or lists of personnel who have been trained also be included. Failure to properly maintain required programs is itself a major source of OSHA citations and fines.
These template programs can greatly simplify a foundry's compliance and record keeping burdens and will easily pay for themselves during your first general OSHA inspection.
