FirstStep Employment Law Advisor - The FirstStep Employment Law Advisor is designed to help employers determine which laws administered by the Department of Labor (DOL) apply to their business or organization and to provide links to information about how to comply with these laws.

O*Net Resource Center - The Occupational Information Network - O*NET™ database takes the place of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) as the nation's primary source of occupational information. The O*NET database and related products will help millions of employers, workers, educators, and students make informed decisions about education, training, career choices, and work. The O*NET Project is administered and sponsored by the US Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.

Common Federal Laws

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) - prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy or any pregnancy-related condition. 

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - prohibits discrimination against employees or job applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Executive Order 11246 - requires government contractors to practice affirmative action.

The Civil Rights Act of 1991 - places a heavier burden on employers attempting to defend themselves against discrimination charges.

Immigration Control Act - prohibits discrimination against any individual on the basis of national origin, citizenship or intended citizenship.

The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) - a federal law that sets minimum standards for pension plans in private industry.

National Labor Relations Act - entitles employees the right to self organization. Prohibits interference, restraint, coercion, or discrimination on the basis of those rights. 

The Age Discrimination in Employment ACT (ADEA) - prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of age against anyone over 40.

Fair Labor Standards Act - prohibits pay employees less than minimum on overtime rate in excess of 40 hours.

The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) - aims to make it easier for persons with disabilities to hold jobs, travel on public transportation, and use public telecommunication services.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) - prohibits companies from not permitting employees to take family and medical leave.

COBRA - Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act - provides for continued health coverage under employer's plan for a limited amount of time after termination, death, divorce, etc.

Plant Closure Law (WARN) - provides protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs.

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - bars discrimination against the disabled by government contractors and recipients of federal financial assistance.

Employee Polygraph Protection Act (EPPA) - prohibits administration of polygraph examinations to applicants and employees. 

The Equal Pay Act - prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in payment of compensation, including benefits.

Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) - must furnish a safe work environment.
